Creating your own dinner party table decorations isn’t as hard as you might think. This easy upcycling idea takes an old cake tin and candlestick and shows you how to turn it into a beautiful dining table centrepiece, perfect for adding a touch of style whatever the occasion.
With just a little love and attention, cake pans really can make sophisticated-looking DIY table centrepieces.
Attached to the top of a candlestick, they make a modern addition to any table and are the perfect holders for showing off striking flowers, fruits or anything to suit your dinner party theme.
What you’ll need:
Vim® Fresh Cream
A microfibre cloth
Bright white paint
Small succulent plants, flowers or candles
An old circular cake tin
An old candlestick
Electric drill
Screwdriver
Screws
Safety gloves and goggles
Step 1: Clean your candlestick and cake tin
Wax is usually tough to clean but with Vim Fresh Cream you can remove it easily. Apply a drop to a damp microfibre cloth and wipe over the wax on your candlestick in one simple motion before rinsing clean. Once you’ve done that, use your Vim Cream in the same way to clean your cake tin, before drying both off with a tea towel, so they’re ready to be upcycled. Do not use on silver (or silver plated) candle sticks
Step 2: Drill holes in your cake tin and candle stick
Put on your safety goggles and gloves. With your drill, work a hole through the centre of the cake tin and candlestick. You want the holes aligned straight through the middle of both, ready to assemble into your elegant new dining table centrepiece.
Step 3: Secure your stand and top together
Still wearing your safety gear, use a screw and screwdriver to bring the candlestick and cake tin together in the centre. Tighten the screw as securely as possible to make sure you have a sturdy dining table centrepiece.
Step 4: Paint your masterpiece
Once your DIY table centrepiece’s firmly secured, paint the whole thing. We painted ours white, but of course choose whichever colour best suits your home. Lay down some brown paper or newspaper and use a large brush to cover as big a surface area as possible in one go. You might need to do a couple of coats to get an even-looking layer.
Step 5: Decorate your dining table centrepiece
Choose your favourite dinner party table decorations to fill your new centrepiece. Things like succulents, flowers and fruit all work well, but pick whatever you think will look best with your existing tableware theme.
